The past two days I rode in the van because of what we term "JHV" or the "Jeff Hunt Virus." It's the most maddening type of virus in that I actually felt generally alright as long as I didn't ride, but as soon as I got elevated body temps from peddling would feel feverish. NOT FUN. Part of this trip is being able to admit that I'm not physically invincible, swallow my pride and van myself when necessary.
It sounds like it was a rough day for everyone yesterday though. Very windy, and a direct headwind for about 88 miles. Most were even saying that it was harder than the really hilly ride to Roscoe because there was no respite from the wind.
My parents cooked Korean food for us in Gilman though, and all of my hopes and dreams of ethnic non-American foods has been satisfied (for the moment). Also, my friend ET and our neighbors Jurgen and Karen Droguemueller showed up! My dad also brought me my Illini Cycling hoodie. It's funny how much I missed having a warm item with a hood. People kept thanking me, and I corrected them to thank my parents because honestly, I tried to stop them from attempting to feed 31 hungry long distance cyclists. (They entirely outdid anything I ever imagined. After the evening, there were still 5 bags of unopened chicken sausages, 3 bags of marinated Korean barbecue ribs, an entire box of oranges, etc.) And I got to sleep in a classy Super 8 Motel. Reminded me of my race weekends with Illini Cycling.
Today I was back on the bike !!!!!!!! Amazing. Mark, Michael, and Jake Stangel were also back on their bikes. Ecstatic. Some of us stopped by at a Catholic service held by the Priests who also presided over the church we stayed at. Of all the churches we've been staying at, it was the first Catholic church. They even sang a hymn I knew (from watching "Little Women" as a child...") Anyways, Father John Bailus mentioned us in his sermon, and many of the people at the service approached us to offer us their prayers and tell us to avoid bears.
And a day off tomorrow, ie sleeping in!

Wow, this is weird. I've never participated in a blog before. I'm doing it for you Sophia. I was happy to realize I could access it after some failed attempts. Anyway, I'll make this short and send you a better email later. It sounds like you are having fun and I'm glad. I'd love to see you at the end of the summer. You'll be so buff. What you're doing sounds really cool and I'm kind of jealous, although I'm horrible on a bicycle. I fall off of them for no apparent reason sometimes. I can imagine your parents feeding all of you quite easily. Your mom always did a fantastic job of that whenever I'd come visit you in Chicago. :) I bet it was nice to let them pamper you on your strenuous journey. Oh, and I know the song you mean. "For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the sky." Ah, nostalgia for Little Women and Catholicism. One of the only things I liked about going to Catholic church when I was young were the hymns. I think Catholic hymns are prettier than most others found in American Christianity. They're kind of mysterious and classic. Okay, I'll end this now. I hope I posted this thing correctly. Stay well. Missing you! Shannon
"Avoid bears." Now *there's* lifelong advice everyone can use. :-)
Good to hear you're back on the bike.
