It was one of those crashes in which your ego hurts more than your body. I should have known better than to be riding so fast on wet sand. Basically, my bike fishtailed wildly before skidding out from underneath. Kevin, right behind me, ran straight into my bike and entangled them ridiculously. I landed on my side and helmet enough to crack it slightly (ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET!!!), but no road rash (remarkably) and ... I bent my chain ring!
Great thing I have connections at this bike shop now; I got a replacement for it right away as well as a helmet to borrow for a few days. Now I don't have to feel guilty about replacing this helmet which I've worn for over a year. It's done its duty admirably.
