First let me explain that I have been considering buying a new bike since the end of my sophomore year, and I am now a senior. In the mean time, I thought long and hard about what my riding/racing style, and this is the result.
I'd been intending to buy myself a bike while I was in France, until I realized that the brands I was interested were mostly Italian anyway, they rarely carried my size (50cm) and they were off of my charts expensive (in Euros). Also, I decided that American brands were pretty awesome too.
This Specialized Roubaix Compact rides pretty much how they claim it to. It isn't the fastest bike, as Chris explained in the store. It's a "sedan" rather than a "Ferrari." For example, the handlebars sit a lot higher than I expected (less aerodynamic), and if I end up wanting to race, the stem should probably be swapped out. My back will thank me for it on the way to Seattle though.
The test ride wasn't very long, it was really just to get a feel for the bike, but even in that short period, the shock absorption seemed to be a lot better than my Giant OCR2. The extra amount of carbon fiber and the zertz inserts seem to be doing their job admirably.
Can't wait for it to get warmer so I can start riding longer distances.
